Benefits of bathing

Whether you prefer baths or showers, it’s something we do every day without a lot of thought. However, there are in fact a lot of benefits, both mental and physical, to bathing that are often overlooked. If you’re lucky enough to have a bath, it’s a great way to clear the mind and enjoy some me-time, with added health benefits. Today, we’re looking at exactly what bath time does for your body and mind.

1. Mental Health Boost

Submerging ourselves in water can help to calm the nervous system, reduce stress and anxiety levels and lead to an improvement in mood. Taking twenty minutes out to yourself in the evening (or any time of the day!) can really work wonders for the mind. Switching off and relaxing for even a small period of time can help us to clear our mind and enjoy some mindfulness.

When you purchase an ishga bath product, such as our Invigorating Bath Salts or Seaweed Bathyou will also receive our exclusive at home sound treatment which allows you to play a relaxing soundtrack composed of natural Hebridean sounds to transport you to the serenity of the Outer Hebrides. A real spa experience in the comfort of your own home!

2. Sleep improvements

At night, our core body temperature begins to drop, which can cause our bodies to produce melatonin – also known as the sleeping hormone. Having a soak in a warm bath raises your body temperature and once you get out your body will start to cool down very quickly, stimulating further melatonin and preparing your body for a good night's sleep.

3. Good for Your Heart

While you relax in your bathtub, the heat causes your blood vessels to dilate, which makes it easier for blood to flow. This temporary decrease in blood pressure is similar to the effects of exercise. In Japan, a twenty-year study was carried out on more than 30,000 people and their bathing habits. It found that those who bathed daily, or every second day, were 28% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 26% less likely to have a stroke compared to those who took baths less than twice a week. If you needed an excuse for some me-time, there it is!

4. Soothes Aching Muscles

The heat from a warm bath can help to relax tight and sore muscles. Adding some Muscle Recovery Oil and Invigorating Bath Salts can be very beneficial for your muscles and joints due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Our core ingredient, Hebridean seaweed extract, is proven to be an excellent anti-inflammatory whilst also hydrating and nourishing the skin with its rich antioxidant, vitamin and mineral content.

5. Ease Cold Symptoms

We have all suffered from a bad cold at one point or another. Nasal passages become inflamed, causing congestion and a very stuffy nose – it's not a nice feeling! A simple remedy to alleviate symptoms is a long hot bath. The steam from the hot water can help to reduce any blockage, allowing you to breathe more easily.
