Dull skin: causes & treatment

Dull skin: causes & treatment

Dull skin can affect everyone at some point in their skincare journey. Sometimes even the most vibrant, glowing skin one week can look tired and uneven the next. Let’s find out why this can happen and the simple tips you can use to get your complexion radiant once again!

What does dull skin look like?

Skin can appear:

  • Flat
  • Tired
  • Uneven texture and tone

What can cause dull skin and how do you avoid it?

You may stick to your skincare regime every morning and night, but are left wondering why your complexion still isn’t as bright as it should be, there are a few factors that can turn that glow into a no-show.

  1. Dead Skin Cells

As we age our cell turnover rate begins to decline and we can end up with a surplus of dead skin cells on the surface of our skin which can then lead to a dull, uneven complexion.

TipExfoliating allows new skin cells to come through leading to more radiant skin. You can use our Exfoliating Face Mask twice a week or use daily by combining with our Active Cleansing Lotion to give a gentle, daily exfoliation.

  1. Lack of good quality sleep

While we sleep our skin goes into restore and recover mode as it works hard to limit any damaging effects you may have encountered through the day, such as stress and external pollution.

Tip: Aim to go to bed at the same time every night to help encourage a good bedtime routine. Remember to remove your make-up before getting any Zzz’s. Double cleanse to make sure your skin is clean and refreshed before bedtime. You can use Marine Cleansing Balm to remove the dirt, grime and make up from the day and follow up with our Active Cleansing Lotion to remove any last traces that might clog your pores.

  1. Free radicals

Free radicals are unstable molecules in the air which can cause cell damage. Pollution can affect your skin, damaging the collagen and causing your complexion to look dull. Antioxidants can help to shield skin from free radicals.

Tip: Use products containing antioxidants to help combat the effects. Our Anti-oxidant Marine Cream contains high levels of natural skin antioxidants known as polyphenols. These antioxidants provide protection against environmental damage to the skin by neutralising the free radicals.

  1. Stress

Our body's reaction to stress can lead to hormonal imbalances, inflammation and it can also cause premature ageing.

Tip: Find the best ways to manage your own stress through mindfulness, exercise and self-care techniques that help to calm and relax you. Enjoying a bath, lighting your favourite candle and listening to our bespoke Hebridean sound treatment can help to soothe body and mind whilst transporting you to the serenity of the Outer Hebrides.

  1. Dehydration

If we don’t drink enough water, the moisture levels below the skin decrease and our skin is left looking dull instead of plump and rosy. Fine lines and wrinkles can appear more pronounced and skin tone can also look uneven.

Tip: Keep a water bottle close to you so you can sip away all day to help give your skin an added hydration boost. Don’t forget to moisturise! Use consistently to help your skin lock in hydration and look brighter. Our Anti-oxidant Marine Cream or Balancing Marine Cream will deliver a potent mix of minerals and vitamins while also giving your skin a deep hydration boost.

  1. Unhealthy habits

Smoking can cause skin to appear dull as can diet high in processed foods that contain high levels of salt and sugar.

Tip: Pack plenty of fruit and vegetables into your mealtimes. Those rich in antioxidants and vitamins such as oranges, strawberries, red grapes and pears will help give your skin essential nutrients.

  1. Sun damage

We all love to get out and enjoy the sun, but sun damage can contribute to a dull complexion. It can shrink collagen, leading to our skin looking flat instead of dewy. It can also cause an increase in hyperpigmentation if you step out without using an SPF.

Tip: Use an SPF that will block both UVA and UVB rays. Apply after you have moisturised and are about to head out the door! Remember to top up frequently, especially if sweating.
