Non-comedogenic ingredients: What are they and how do they affect your skin?

What products you use and how they interact with your skin is one of the most important factors to consider when it comes to building your unique skincare routine. Product formulation is important to understand and in particular, whether the product is non-comedogenic.

What does non-comedogenic mean?

Non-comedogenic refers to ingredients or products that won't clog your pores. A comedo is a hair follicle that has become clogged and it can be open (blackhead) or closed over by the skin (whitehead). When a product contains comedogenic ingredients, it will have a higher likelihood of contributing further to any blockage in the skin. Non-comedogenic products tend to be lighter formulas which don't clog pores, and are perfect for those with acne-prone, combination or oily skin.

What's the difference between acne, whiteheads and blackheads?

Whiteheads and blackheads are variations of comedonal acne. While acne is classified as a skin condition, it can occur at any time in your life. Acne can occur in many different areas of the face and body, and goes by various classifications such as cystic and hormonal. While the direct cause of acne is clogged pores, the underlying cause may go much deeper and be related to what is going on inside your body - such as diet, hormones, lifestyle and other health related factors.

The role of non-comedogenic ingredients

A non-comedogenic product does not mean it will treat acne, the term means it will not make the acne worse. The ingredients work to minimise the the risk of clogged pores and reduce the effects by working to clean out the any excess sebum (skin's natural oil) and bacteria that is blocking your pores.

Do ishga products contain non-comedogenic ingredients?

We use non-comedogenic ingredients in several of our products. Our Regenerating Face Serum, Active Cleansing Lotion, Anti-oxidant Marine Cream, Balancing Marine Cream and Hebridean Marine Toner all contain aloe vera which is a non-comedeogenic ingredient with high water content. Aloe vera is ideal for reducing redness and inflammation whilst promoting a refreshed and even skin tone.

Our Active Cleansing Lotion, Nourishing Facial Oil, Invigorating Body Oil and Beard & Shave Oil contain jojoba oil, another non-comedogenic ingredient which has antioxidant properties that protect and heal the skin. Our Hydra+ Marine Cream contains hyaluronic acid, which boosts and maintains skin hydration levels, accelerates tissue repair and cell regeneration.

Can you use oil based products on acne prone or oily skin?

Yes! It's a common misconception that you should not use oil based products if you have oily or acne prone skin. They can help to regulate the skin's natural sebum production and also replenish lost oils after acne treatments. Not all products that contain oil will be comedogenic. Jojoba oil, which is in our Nourishing Face Oil, is non-comedogenic and therefore won't block pores. Our face oil also contains rose geranium which helps to balance the skin's natural oil production and minimise the appearance of enlarged pores. It's lightweight and non-greasy, providing a hydrating and nourishing treatment for all skin types.

Whether you are searching for skincare products that will help your acne or simply want to maintain healthy, glowing skin, understanding what you are putting on your skin can help to take your skincare routine in the right direction and towards better skin health.
