Pro-ageing: A healthy, balanced approach to skincare

Pro-ageing is traditionally not a term that has been used in the beauty industry. Historically, the focus has been on youth, with the term ‘anti-ageing’ being used for decades. In the last few years, there has been a positive shift in this viewpoint as we start to see more embracing pro-ageing – keeping your skin healthy and nourished, at whatever life stage you are at.

What is pro-ageing?

Pro-ageing is about positively approaching skincare and beauty as you age. It focuses on embracing your skin, as unique as it is, and keeping it as healthy and nourished as possible, with a realistic and holistic outlook. It combats the typical narrative that ageing is something to be looked at negatively, but rather a gift or opportunity to be embraced. Fine lines and wrinkles have long been demonised by the beauty industry, and although many of us may not welcome them, they are a natural part of growing older. What’s important is that you can accept the life stage you are at and live it to the max, whilst taking care of your skin, body and mind to look and feel your best.

As we grow older, the best skincare routine you can have is a preventative one. It’s also important to adapt what products you use as the needs of your skin change. A healthy lifestyle, exercise and sleep are important too, paying attention to these while also maintaining a regular skincare routine is the best way to care for your skin as you get older.

What should I look for in my skincare products?

At ishga, we believe natural is best. And one of the most abundant and incredible natural resource we have is seaweed. Seaweed is full of vitamins and mineral, with powerful skin benefiting properties, making it an ideal ingredient for taking care of ageing skin.

  • Hydration - As we age our skin becomes thinner and drier as it can’t hold moisture like it used to. The skin also produces less sebum (oil) so it is not as smooth as it once was. Seaweed is full of humectants that draw in moisture from the environment to re-hydrate. It contains high levels of essential fatty acids and polysaccharides which help to protect our skin barrier and lock in moisture.
  • Antioxidants - Hebridean seaweed contains high levels of antioxidant compounds which provide protection against environmental damage to the skin by neutralising free radicals. Free radicals are harmful molecules that exist all around us which can cause inflammation of the skin and accelerate signs of ageing.
  • Cell regeneration - Studies show that brown seaweed promotes skin cell regeneration demonstrating the ability to support wound healing and the formation of skin tissue. This means skin blemishes and marks can fade more effectively.
  • Collagen support – Seaweed has been found to support collagen production. As we age, collagen production reduces by around 1-2% per year from the age of 25, making it important to include products that support the natural production of it to maintain supple skin. Find out more about how seaweed supports collagen here.
  • Detoxes the skin - Vitamin rich Hebridean seaweed contains high levels of polysaccharides. These are molecules which bind to harmful metal components such as mercury, lead and cobalt that can be found in small amounts in the skin. This reduces the damage they can cause and maintains healthy skin.

What should my skincare routine look like?
