Sunny day skincare

Here at ishga we talk about the importance of applying SPF before you go out into the sun. We all know the preventative measures to take, but what skincare steps should you take after being in the sun? Looking after your skin post-sun is just as important.

1.Cooling shower

While on holiday in the sun, skin can be exposed to salt water, sand and chlorine if you are by the pool or beach. These can all dehydrate the skin, so one of the best things you can do is take a cold, refreshing shower when you get back to your accommodation. The shower will clean your skin of any chlorine or salt water, while the cold water will cool your skin. If you go back into the sun after your shower, just remember to reapply sunscreen.

2.Cleanse face and body

After a day in the sun our skin will have a mixture of sunscreen, sand and sweat. It’s a good idea to thoroughly cleanse the skin but not use anything too harsh or abrasive on your skin barrier after it’s been in the sun all day.

Face

To help the skin rehydrate use a gentle water-based cleanser. ishga Active Cleansing Lotion will easily remove the day’s dirt and grime, while calming the skin with bergamot oil extracted from citrus peel. Store your Cleansing Lotion in the fridge so it has an extra cooling effect on the skin. Our 30ml size is perfect for travelling with.

Body

ishga Shampoo & Body Bar combines our unique seaweed extract with soothing aloe vera and spring water. It has been formulated to be free from sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and features a high glycerine content providing a comforting, moisturising effect and a soothing skin feel, perfect for a post sun cleanse. The handy size and lightweight box make it ideal for travelling with. It cleanses both hair and body, meaning you can reduce the amount of bottles you need to take away with you.

3.Moisturise

It's super important to keep your face and body moisturised after being in the sun. You can store your products in the fridge, and once you have had a shower, apply them to slightly damp skin for a cooling and soothing effect.

Face

ishga Anti-oxidant Marine Cream is ideal for dehydrated skin. Containing essential fatty acids Omega 6 and 7, which absorb excess sebum, while nourishing thirsty skin. Vitamin E plumps, heals and smooths, while calming bergamot detoxifies the skin and keeps it clean and fresh. If you shower during the day and head back into the sun don’t forget to apply your SPF over your moisturiser.

Body

Take care of the skin on your body by using a deeply nourishing but easily absorbed moisturiser. ishga Invigorating Body Lotion contains no perfume, just fine essential oils, carefully chosen to help dry, dehydrated skin.

Lips

Just like the skin on your face, your lips can also be affected by the sun. Keep them from drying out by applying a Replenishing Lip Balm. Available in a generous 30ml jar, this luxurious, natural lip balm will re-hydrate the delicate lip area, helping to prevent dry, chapped lips. There are also many other uses for a lip balm which you can read about here.

 4.Be careful with exfoliation

This is especially important if you have got sunburn, and the skin has begun to peel – let the skin come off naturally and avoid picking it. Your skin barrier will be damaged and using exfoliating products will likely cause more irritation and be painful. If you do wish to exfoliate, do it in the evening with a gentle and natural exfoliator, to allow your skin to calm before it’s exposed to the sun the following day. Our Hebridean Sea Salt Scrub for body, and Exfoliating Face Mask for face, are gentle but effective natural exfoliators.

Don’t forget...

  • Wear an SPF at all times when outside, even if it’s a cloudy day.
  • Wear a hat to protect your head and shoulders.
  • To feel refreshed and cool the skin through the day, spritz Hebridean Marine Toner lightly over the face.
