Understanding Skincare for Psoriasis
Share
August is Psoriasis Awareness Month. Psoriasis is more than just a skin condition, it’s a chronic autoimmune disease that affects millions of people around the world. While it can be physically uncomfortable and emotionally distressing, understanding this condition and what skincare to use to help manage it, is the first step to support healthy skin.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-term inflammatory skin condition that causes the skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This rapid cell turnover leads to the buildup of skin cells on the surface, forming thick, scaly patches that are often red, itchy, and inflamed.
The most common form, plaque psoriasis, typically appears on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back. However, it can occur anywhere on the body, and severity varies widely, from small, localised patches to full-body coverage.
ishga for Psoriasis
Here's a review from just one of many customers, who have found our products to greatly help their psoriasis:
"I should start by saying I have psoriasis, eczema and regularly take hives with products. Almost daily! After a Christmas that saw my face shed a layer of skin from a bad reaction, my friend stepped in and gifted me the cleansing lotion and balancing face cream, she has always raved about it as she too has sensitive skin. I had only been reluctant because of the price point and having spent so much on other brands and products only to have still not found a solution for my skin. Now my ishga range has grown and I have had no issue with any other products: recovery oil, bath salts and hand cream. So the price point is if little concern to me now as it is absolutely worth it, I shout about it to all my friends with or without problematic skin. I had went years with having baths only in Epsom salt, moisturising and washing with zeroderm, prescription cream from the doctors and never being able to have anything scented on my skin. Last night I had a bath with my ishga salts, ishga candle on in the background, cleansed my face, applied the recovery oil, face cream and hand cream and went to bed smelling divine and feeling so relaxed and content. Highly recommend."

Psoriasis skincare tips
Although there’s currently no cure, psoriasis can be manageable, and many people can live comfortably with it if managed well.
1. Moisturise regularly
Keeping the skin moisturised is essential. Our core ingredient seaweed soothes and nourishes skin. Many of our customers with psoriasis have found that our products have considerably helped their flare-ups, in particular the ishga Marine Creams. Seaweed is full of humectants that draw in moisture from the environment, helping ease dry, irritated skin. It also contains high levels of essential fatty acids and polysaccharides which help to protect our skin barrier and lock in moisture.
2. Bathe gently
Use lukewarm water and limit showers to 10 minutes or less. Natural bath soaks, like those infused with our Invigorating Bath Salts can help soften plaques and reduce discomfort.
3. Avoid harsh products
Using harsh skincare products can aggravate psoriasis, as the skin barrier is already delicate and more prone to sensitivity. Using natural products will help soothe the skin and aid in healing. ishga is Certified Organic by the Soil Association. This means our products are free from artificial colours, dyes, fragrances, GM ingredients, parabens and phthalates. This certification reflects our mission to deliver results-driven skincare that nourishes, hydrates and heals, naturally.
4. Manage stress
Stress is a well-known trigger for psoriasis flare-ups. Integrating wellbeing rituals into your daily or weekly routine can help. Whether this is through exercise, getting outdoors into nature, or taking time to indulge in a self-care skincare routine accompanied with calming natural scents.
Psoriasis may be a lifelong condition for some, but it doesn't have to define your life. With knowledge, self-care, and the right skincare routine, you can support your skin’s natural balance.
