Why is seaweed bathing so good for you?

Seaweed bathing is nothing new, in fact the practice originates centuries ago. In recent years it has increased in popularity due to the incredible benefits of seaweed becoming more prevalent. A soak in the bath can be soothing for mind and body after a long day, but what are the additional benefits of adding seaweed?

Read on to find out more about our top benefits of seaweed bathing.

It’s moisturising

Seaweed is mineral dense which means it is wonderful for hydrating the skin. It has a high moisture content, making it an ideal carrier to deliver hydrating compounds to the skin. Amino acids found in seaweeds are hydrating as they prevent water loss in the skin and therefore retain moisture. Once the seaweed is placed in warm water it releases the mineral rich oils, at the same time your pores and blood vessels are opened which allows the skin to absorb the minerals and vitamins in the water.

It soothes muscle aches and pains

Any depleted minerals such as potassium and iodine will be replaced. The magnesium found in seaweed also works to remove toxins from your body which can help to relieve aches, pains, and inflammation, giving you that blissful post-bathing relaxation.

It’s detoxifying

Vitamin rich Hebridean seaweed contains high levels of polysaccharides, such as alginates and fucoidan. These molecules bind to harmful metal components such as mercury, lead and cobalt that can be found in small amounts in the skin. This reduces the damaging effects they can have, and results in less inflammation and improved elasticity of the skin.

It can help with psoriasis and eczema

If you have psoriasis or eczema, the mineral-rich seaweed can help to soothe and heal your dry, irritated skin. Studies show that brown seaweeds accelerate skin cell regeneration and our team have carried out research on our own extracts that suggests this to be true for Hebridean seaweeds. Fucoidan, found in the cell walls of seaweed, has also demonstrated the ability to support healing and the formation of skin tissue.
