Seasonal allergies and your skin
Share
Seasonal allergies – also called seasonal allergic rhinitis - can lead to sneezing, itching, watery eyes, coughing and a runny nose, all things we could do with less of when we’re trying to enjoy summer! Allergy season is typically March – August, and although we can’t help with your hay fever, we can give some advice on how to lessen the affects allergies may cause on your skin.
Allergies and your immune system
When allergens enter the body or come into contact with the skin, the immune system views it as a threat and reacts. As a response, histamine is released from the cells and is tasked with getting rid of the allergy trigger. As this happens, in some cases there is an overreaction and this is what causes the typical symptoms of hay fever like sneezing, itching, and coughing.
How do allergies affect the skin?
Some of the symptoms are:
- Rashes
- Itchiness
- Hives – red, raised bumps that can be itchy
- Eczema – It does not cause eczema, but it can cause flare ups if it exists already
Four tips to care for your skin during allergy season
- Use products with anti-inflammatory properties
Hebridean seaweed is rich in antioxidants, minerals and contains anti-inflammatory properties. The anti-inflammatory properties will help to reduce itching and inflammation. The potent properties in the seaweed transfer to our skin to deliver protection and healing. Used throughout the range, our mineral-rich extract is blended with organic ingredients to create each results-driven product, suitable for all skin types.
- Simplify your skincare routine
Stripping back the number of products you use can help your skin settle while you deal with the allergies and any flare ups. Try using 2-3 products that will nourish and hydrate your skin without overloading it. A simple cleanse, tone and moisturise using ishga products can do wonders for the skin. SImple, but effective!
- Cleanse and hydrate daily
Use a water-based cleanser morning and evening to gently clean the skin, and a hydrating moisturiser so your skin is well moisturised morning and evening. This will help to combat any dryness caused by allergies, especially on areas like the nose and mouth where we may be touching more. And as always, remember your water intake to help you glow from the inside out!
- Use an eye & lip balm
The delicate skin around the eyes needs special attention as the skin is thinner than the rest of the face. If you suffer from watery eyes while dealing with your allergies then the skin around your eyes will become even more dry and sensitive. Use an eye balm that will nourish with a light blend of natural ingredients. Lips can be prone to drying out too during allergy season, so carry around a natural, replenishing lip balm to keep them soft and hydrated all summer.
